Mission Statement: The mission of the Great Lakes Literary Arts Center is to develop excellence in the literary arts by nurturing creative writing, providing quality literature and fostering a literate public.
Karl Pohrt announced early in 2008 his dream to transform the Shaman Drum Bookshop which he has owned and run for twenty-eight years into a nonprofit literary arts center. Karl’s intention is to preserve this excellent literary and scholarly bookshop while expanding its scope to include not only the author appearances and readings that are already part of Shaman Drum’s contribution to the Ann Arbor area but to create new programs in creative writing, workshops with well known authors, reading groups, performances and support for new writers. The State of Michigan certified our articles of incorporation in June 2008. Karl has effectively given to the community The Shaman Drum in its new incarnation as The Great Lakes Literary Arts Center. In this way the mission that began in 1980 with the founding of the Shaman Drum Bookshop continues and grows.
The Great Lakes Literary Arts Center has a profound commitment to its mission. We believe that good writing and focused, attentive, intelligent reading deepen, enrich and expand the horizons of our human experience. We exist to provide a common location where readers and writers can share ideas, work on writing projects, meet like-minded others and find the best of literature and scholarly writing. The Great Lakes Literary Arts Center dedicates itself to this transformative, artistic endeavor.
GLLAC is in its formative stages. We encourage you to ask questions and become a supporter of this new literary arts center in Michigan. We promise to stay in touch with you as we strive to promote the very best in literary writing through author readings and creative writing workshops. Welcome to Shaman Drum Bookshop! Since 1980, Shaman Drum has happily served the Ann Arbor community, offering a wide selection of literature, poetry, and graphic novels for the discerning reader. The bookshop continues to offer the widest selection of academic and scholarly titles in Michigan.
Bookshop Hours:
Monday – Saturday: 10 AM – 9 PM
Sunday: 12 PM – 7 PM
Textbook Hours:
Monday - Thursday: 10 AM - 6 PM
Friday: 10 AM - 5 PM
Saturday - Sunday: Closed
