Desk Copy FAQ

Does Shaman Drum provide me with desk copies?

No, the publisher provides desk copies to instructors. Shaman Drum requests desk copies from the publisher on behalf of instructors who list exclusively with us.

Why does Shaman Drum request desk copies for instructors?

We do this as a courtesy to instructors who list with us, since tracking desk copies can be a very time consuming task.

Can I contact the publisher myself?

Definitely. In fact, publishers often process desk copies more quickly after hearing directly from the instructor. We are happy to provide you with a publisher’s contact information.

Where are my desk copies sent?

Desk copies are sent directly to your department. They cannot be sent to Shaman Drum or to an instructor’s residence.

How many desk copies will I get?

This is dependent upon the publisher. Different publishers have different guidelines that determine how many desk copies are granted for a given course. Some publishers have a set formula, such as one desk copy for every twenty-five students in the class, and some will provide one desk copy per GSI.

Note: Desk copies are never guaranteed. If you’d like to make sure that you will receive desk copies for a title you’ve adopted for a class, it’s best to contact the publisher.

How long does it take to get my desk copies?

Publishers usually take about 2-3 weeks to process desk copy requests. Unfortunately, delays are common during Fall and Winter Rush times.

What can I do if I haven’t received my desk copies yet?

First, let us know, and we will re-request the desk copy from the publisher.

Second, it is often very effective to get in touch with the publisher yourself. We are happy to provide contact information if you wish to do so.

Finally, if you are still waiting on a desk copy, but need a copy of the book immediately, you are welcome to purchase a copy from Shaman Drum, and then return it (with your receipt) once your desk copy arrives. Moreover, you may also return the desk copy (with your receipt) in place of the book you purchased, provided it does not have any stamps or markings in it indicating that it is a desk copy.
